my own grief recovery journey

When I first read the Grief Recovery Handbook I felt it was written just for me. I was amazed at the easy way it was written to help people understand how complicated loss is and how it affects us.

My eyes were opened when I read about the myths surrounding grief, what society accepts as ‘normal’ behaviour following a loss and how I, like many others, said things to other grievers that was anything but helpful.

Comments like “don’t be sad, you can have another go” after a failed IVF attempt or "at least she had a good long life” after my mother died, only made my heart hurt even more - because now I was feeling guilt on top of the grief.

I was really excited to learn about how to recover from grief for myself but also I was given the practical tools of how to help other people with their unresolved loss.

It is scary to actually sit down to devote some time to think of all the losses in life, to put it down on paper and then to share all that with another human being. It is rare in life that we get to do that, so when Grief Recovery came along, it was something that I grabbed with my two hands and am so grateful that I did.

Don’t get me wrong I still have the odd bad day and feel sad but there is no longer any pain when I think of the losses and I am very grateful for that.  I don’t have to carry this pain any more or carry it to the grave with me and that is because of Grief Recovery.

If you can identify with any of this, or if you are not really sure but feel like there are losses in your life that you have never really spoke about with anyone, please get in touch me.

We can have a chat and I will take you through the programme step by step so that you will be able to move beyond what you are experiencing and you will be more in control of your life.

You don’t have to carry this pain any more.

I enjoy pyrography. It’s the art of burning images or text into wood. I create gifts for family and friends, like Christmas decorations and wall plaques.
